Margaret Lai joined the firm in 2011.  She is a skilled civil litigation and appellate attorney with extensive experience in products liability, class action suits, contract disputes, and criminal matters.  She is very familiar with the federal court system, as well as many state jurisdictions. 

She joins us after a successful career at Diaz Reus, where her practice areas were in appeals, trial support, and international litigation. Prior to her experience there, she worked for Carpenter Lipps & Leland, LLP, a boutique litigation firm in Columbus, Ohio. 

Prior Experience

Prior to joining our firm, she worked on several significant cases.  Below is a sampling of Ms. Lai's involvement:

Seijas v. Republic of Argentina  – Assisted in representing Argentinean bondholders as co-lead counsel in a series of class actions against the Republic of Argentina.

Seijas v. Republic of Argentina and Banco de la Nacion Argentina – Assisted in representing plaintiffs seeking declaratory judgment that Banco de la Nacion Argentina was the Republic’s alter ego both in the Southern District of New York and on appeal in the Second Circuit.

Cedeno v. Intech Group, Inc., et al. – Assisted in obtaining dismissal of a civil RICO suit in the Southern District of New York and defending client on appeal in the Second Circuit.

Nowicki v. Cessna Aircraft Co. – Assisted in representing Cessna Aircraft Company in the Fourth District Court of Appeal.

Banco Latino, S.A.C.A. v. Explotaciones Mineras de Venezuela C.A., et al. – Participated in the trial team which successfully obtained consent to the entry of a multimillion-dollar judgment.

Akien v. State – Assisted in representing the petitioner to the Florida Supreme Court seeking adoption by Florida courts of a clear standard for determining whether a statement constitutes an excited utterance.
